January is filled with fitness and nutrition challenges. In 2020, I want to offer a different kind of a challenge. A step back from the scale. For the whole month of January I challenge you to not weigh yourself. The number on the scale can be very discouraging. Weight fluctuates day to day based on more than just what you ate. How well you slept, how you hydrated you are, if you just used the bathroom, and where you are in your cycle can all impact weight. By just looking at the number on the scale you may think you made no progress even when other signs show otherwise. I see clients getting discouraged by the number on the scale not shifting or not shifting enough even when they are have more energy, are sleeping better, and generally feel better.
The hyperfocus on a specific weight goal shifts focus away from other ways to measure health improvement. So I ask you to step off the scale for one month and pay attention to other measures of progress. Changes in mood, energy, sleep, performance, recovery and your cycle all can be used to track progress.
I’ll be offering tips and encouragement on Instagram and Facebook throughout the month. Will you join me in #noweighJanuary
